Local city officials are reminding community members to be prepared for an emergency. The Solana Beach City Council on Sept. 11 and the Del Mar City Council on Sept. 16 proclaimed September as National Preparedness Month.
Launched in 2004 and sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency within the Department of Homeland Security, National Preparedness Month is a national effort that encourages Americans to prepare for home, business and school emergencies. The event aims to provide public awareness concerning emergency preparation, as well as persuade people to take action.
The Friends of the Carmel Valley Branch Library will be holding a bargain book sale fundraiser on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 12:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. to benefit the library.
Proceeds will go to buy new materials for the library and to pay for children’s programs, art and music programs. Come and fill a bag with books for only $2 at the bargain book sale and support the Carmel Valley Branch Library.
An estimated 42,546 new and resale houses and condos sold statewide last month. That was down 1.9 percent from a revised 43,381 in July, and up 3.1 percent from 41,280 sales in August 2012, according to San Diego-based DataQuick.
The sales count was the highest for any August since 51,054 homes sold in August 2006. August sales have varied from a low of 29,764 in 1992 to a high of 73,285 in 2005. Last month's sales were 11.1 percent below the average of 47,849 sales for all the months of August since 1988, when DataQuick's statistics begin.
On Thursday, Sept. 19, Junior Achievement of San Diego County hosts its 1st Annual JA Golf Classic presented by San Diego Fluid System Technologies. The new event will premier at The Grand Golf Club and will feature a cocktail reception, silent auction and dinner.
The Grand Golf Club is located at The Grand Del Mar and spreads through Los Penasquitos Canyon. Designed by Tom Fazio, this private 18-hole golf course is a 7,160-yard, par 72 championship masterpiece with multiple tees suited to many abilities.
